Dr Beynon's Bug Farm
A Farm with a Difference.
Based on a beautiful working 100 acre farm just a mile out of St Davids, The Bug Farm is a visitor attraction and scientific research centre. It was set up by St Davids born TV entomologist (insect expert), ecologist and farmer Dr Sarah Beynon. Launching officially in June 2016, this is a brand new venture and was awarded the 2016 Best Start-Up Business in the UK award* and the 2016 Plantlife International Best Meadow Maker of Wales Award.
A Tropical Bug Zoo boasts an impressive array of some of the most extraordinary bugs (invertebrates) on the planet, while a fascinating Bug Museum houses part of the UK’s largest private collection of butterflies, alongside other spectacular displays. There is a Bug Art Gallery in the Old Milking Shed, which is the base for self-guided bug arts and crafts workshops, and the Bug Barn indoor rustic play barn is a great place for kids to let off steam.
A Bug Farm Trail leads visitors on a physical journey round the farm of how we can produce food efficiently and look after wildlife at the same time, with hints and tips for learning how you can support this type of farming. It also showcases new research results from The Bug Farm. This interesting walk also allows children to go bug hunting, exploring the farmed environment in a hands-on fashion. A tranquil Walled Garden, landscaped specifically for bugs and other wildlife, and gift shop complete the attraction.
Captivating Tropical Bug Zoo tours and fun Bug Handling sessions run every day and The Bug Farm also runs a varied programme of workshops, lectures and talks. Please see website for more information and pre-booking options.
The Bug Farm is also the home of Grub Kitchen café and restaurant, run by top chef Andy Holcroft. Grub Kitchen has been hailed as the UK’s first restaurant with edible insects on the menu full-time. Also serving many non-insect dishes, created with produce from sustainable farming, Grub Kitchen really does help us to showcase the food chain from field to fork all on one site here at The Bug Farm. Please see www.grubkitchen.co.uk or phone 07986 698169 for more information, as well as to enquire about evening dining.
The Bug Farm is open to the public on weekends year-round and Saturday-Thursday (closed Fridays) during school holidays.
